Antarctica

For most of us it is « Terra Incognita », an unknown terrestrial – Antarctica. The white continent is bigger than Europe and home of many animals and plants. With the exibition « Antarctica » the Übersee-Museum opens a window to one of the last healthy eco-systems in the world.

Ten years after « The March of the Penguins », the Oscar-winning filmmaker Luc Jacquet returns to Antarctica. For the first time a team of artists has captured over 45 days with highest equipment and techniques the extraordinary terrestrial and underwater diversity of the white continent. The visitor is invited to dive side by side with Weddell seals and emperor penguins in Adelie Land into the depths of the Southern Ocean. He will discover the teeming life of deep water. Returning to the surface, he will step onto the ice. Surrounded by screens several meters high, he will be present at scenes of the daily life of colonies of penguins, lost in contemplation of the beauty of the ice, which stretches out as far the eye can see.

This exibition was curated by Luc Jacquet in ccoperation with the Musée des Confluences in Lyon, France. It is completed by current researches of the  Alfred-Wegener-Institut and exponates of different museums.

Dix ans après « la Marche de l’Empereur », le réalisateur oscarisé Luc Jacquet retourne en
Antarctique. Pour la première fois, une équipe artistique capte pendant 45 jours, avec du
matériel et des techniques perfectionnés, l’extraordinaire biodiversité terrestre et sousmarine
du continent blanc.
Luc Jacquet, accompagné de deux photographes naturalistes, Laurent Ballesta et
Vincent Munier explore avec sa propre sensibilité l’univers polaire. Sous la glace, Laurent
Ballesta, photographe plongeur et biologiste marin, réalise un défi technique et humain
en découvrant à des profondeurs jusque-là inexplorées une biodiversité méconnue. Sur la
glace, Vincent Munier, photographe des milieux extrêmes, témoigne de la vie animale en
Terre Adélie.
Autant de témoignages sensibles d’un territoire qui n’est représenté par aucun peuple.
